Alex's Lemonade Stand THIS SATURDAY!

When Alexandra (Alex) Scott, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her first birthday, was four, she told her parents she wanted to set up a front-yard lemonade stand. Her plan: to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure. Her first “Alex’s Lemonade Stand” raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day. While bravely fighting her own cancer, Alex continued to set up lemonade stands every year. As news spread of the remarkable girl so dedicated to helping other sick children, people everywhere were inspired to start their own lemonade stands—donating the proceeds to her cause.

In 2004 when Alex passed away at the age of eight—her stand and inspiration had raised over $1 million towards finding a cure for the disease that took her life. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was started by her parents in 2005 to continue the work that Alex began. The mission is simple: to raise money for and awareness of childhood cancer causes—especially research into new treatments and cures—and to encourage and educate others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer.

This Saturday, a local family will be hosting an Alex's Lemonade Stand at our store from 11am-4pm. Free lemonade and baked goods will be provided, and, of course, donations will be gratefully accepted. We will be handing out coupons to the store and at the end of the day 10% of our profits will go to the Alex's Lemonade Stand. Childbirth Preparation Class This Saturday

We know how challenging and overwhelming labor can be. Childbirth education is extremely important to help calm those fears.

Join us for a full childbirth education class in a nurturing, private environment.

Your body knows how to give birth and your baby knows how to be born, but that doesn't mean expectant couples don't have questions! Come join other expectant parents to gain the knowledge and confidence you will need to meet the challenges of labor. We'll prepare you for the big day, from how to write a birth plan to informing you of your choices surrounding your baby's birth.

A full childbirth preparation series, we'll discuss everything from the stages of labor, to comfort measures, to what to pack. Couples are encouraged to bring a pillow and a birth or exercise ball (if needed, instructor will have one available).

Infant Massage Class Starts Tomorrow!

Touch is a vital necessity to ensure a healthy, happy infant. Through a parent's loving touch, babies feel loved and secure. Numerous studies now show that infant massage plays a significant role in promoting the proper growth and healthy development of infants. Massage stimulates the nerves, increases blood flow and strengthens the immune system. In addition, massage can help to relieve many childhood complaints, from colic (rubbing baby's belly can help to relieve and gas and regulate digestion) to congestion (which can be eased through a chest massage). Infant Massage can help your baby to fuss less and sleep better. What parent wouldn't want that for their child?

You can learn more about the benefits and Infant Massage, and how to do it yourself at our Infant Massage class. Parents and babies birth through one year are welcome as well as older siblings. Please bring a baby blanket and bed size pillow.

Expectant parents are also welcome. A doll will be provided for in class practice.

The New Bum Genius 4.0's!

All good things must come to an end, and here at Nurture, we are sadly getting ready to say goodbye to one of our favorite cloth diapers. The Bum Genius 3.0 diaper has been (gasp) discontinued! But have no fear! This one-size, absorbent, affordable, reusable cloth diaper is being replaced with the new and improved Bum Genius 4.0 diaper!

If you are unfamiliar with cloth diapers or the Bum Genius 3.0 diaper, then you can learn more about these products by reading some of our older blog post, like this one on cloth diapering, and this post all about the BG 3.0's.

The new Bum Genius 4.0 diapers will have all of the great features and benefits of the 3.0's but with some improvements:

Baby Matters Recalls Nap Nanny(r) Recliners Due to Entrapment, Suffocation and Fall Hazards; One Infant Death Reported

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Baby Matters LLC, of Berwyn, Pa., is announcing the voluntary recall of 30,000 Nap Nanny(r) portable baby recliners. CPSC is investigating a report of a 4-month-old girl from Royal Oak, Mich. who died in a Nap Nanny(r) that was being used in a crib. According to preliminary reports, the infant was in her harness and found hanging over the side of the product, caught between the Nap Nanny(r) and the crib bumper.

CPSC and Baby Matters are aware of one other incident in which an infant became entrapped when the Nap Nanny was used in a crib, contrary to the product instructions. In that incident, the infant fell over the side of the Nap Nanny(r), despite being harnessed in, and was caught between the baby recliner and the side of the crib. The infant sustained a cut to the forehead.

CPSC and the firm have received 22 reports of infants, primarily younger than 5-months-old, hanging or falling out over the side of the Nap Nanny(r) despite most of the infants being placed in the harness. One infant received a bruise as a result of hanging over the side of the product.

Infants can partially fall or hang over the side of the Nap Nanny(r) even while the harness is in use. This situation can be worse if the Velcro(tm) straps, located inside the Nap Nanny(r) cover are not properly attached to the "D"-rings located on the foam, or if consumers are using the first generation model Nap Nanny(r) that was sold without "D"-rings.

In addition, if the Nap Nanny(r) is placed inside a crib, play yard or other confined area, which is not a recommended use, the infant can fall or hang over of the side of the Nap Nanny(r) and become entrapped between the crib side and the Nap Nanny(r) and suffocate.

Likewise, if the Nap Nanny(r) is placed on a table, countertop, or other elevated surface and a child falls over the side, it poses a risk of serious head injury. Consumers should always use the Nap Nanny(r) on the floor away from any other products.

The Nap Nanny(r) is a portable recliner designed for sleeping, resting and playing. The recliner includes a foam base with an inclined indentation for the infant to sit in and a fitted fabric cover and a three point harness. The first generation model of the Nap Nanny(r) can be identified by the absence of "D"-rings in the foam base. In second generation models, the harness system has "D"-rings in the foam base and Velcro(tm) straps inside the fitted fabric cover.

The recalled Nap Nannys(r) were sold at toy and children's retail stores nationwide and online, including at www.napnanny.com, from January 2009 through July 2010 for about $130.

The recalled product was manufactured in the United States and China.

Consumers with a first generation Nap Nanny(r) models, without "D"-rings, should stop using the recalled baby recliners immediately and contact the firm to receive an $80 coupon towards the purchase of a new Nap Nanny(r) with free shipping. Consumers with a second generation Nap Nanny(r) model, with "D"-rings, should immediately stop using the product until they are able to visit the firm's website to obtain new product instructions and warnings. Consumers will also view an important instructional video to help consumers ensure the harness is properly fastened. Consumers who are unable to view the video or new instructions online, should contact the firm to receive free copies by mail. By now you have heard of our Music Monkey Fitness class, and hopefully you were able to come out and try one of our free demo days. But, in case you haven't, we'll tell you again about this engaging, fun and interactive fitness class for parents (& their kids) that starts this Wednesday!

With Music Monkey Music & Movement, getting into shape is easy, fun and completely kid friendly. Join Miss Scherling for workouts like you've never experienced before because, yes, the kids are welcome too. We'll combine dance, movement, body awareness, aerobics, balance, fine motor skills and games with our favorite songs from past and present. All fitness levels welcome. Children ages 8 months to 4 years.

The eight week session will be held on Wednesdays, starting this Wednesday, July 7th and ending on September 1st. (Don't worry, if you have vacation plans this summer we can prorate the class fee for you). Class starts at 9:30am and ends at 10:15. We hope to see you this Wednesday to shake, move and grove those pounds away!

Safe Kids International works to prevent unintentional childhood injury by educating families, providing safety devices to families in need and advocating for better laws to help keep children safe, healthy and out of the emergency room.

Music Monkey Fitness Classes

So whether you did or did not attend the Weigh Less, Live More, EAT CHOCOLATE! workshop, you probably already know that one of the best ways to loose those left over pregnancy pounds is to get up and move your body. Although with a baby or toddler in tow, it's not always easy to get a work out in. Maybe your lucky and your child sits quietly in the jogging stroller while you walk or run, but the pesky weather needs to cooperate too! Or maybe a big case of separation anxiety is keeping you from being able to take advantage of the daycare at your gym. Whatever your reason may be, we all struggle with finding time for exercise, especially when we have little ones at home. That is what gave our friend, Miss Lori Scherling, the idea for "Music Monkey Fitness," engaging, fun and interactive fitness for parents (and their kids)

With Music Monkey Music & Movement, getting into shape is easy, fun and completely kid friendly. This isn't your everyday run on the treadmill. You and your child will experience workouts like you've never experienced before. New Breastfeeding Support Group!

When it comes to feeding your newborn baby, most will agree that "breast is best." In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. In addition to containing all the vitamins and nutrients your newborn needs, breast milk is packed with disease fighting substances that protect your baby from illness. Breastfeeding protects your baby from gastrointestinal trouble, respiratory problems and ear infections. Breastfeeding can prevent your baby from developing allergies. Several studies have found possible connections between breastfeeding and higher IQ's. Researches have concluded that early breastfeeding is linked to a reduced risk of obesity. Studies have shown that breastfeeding may lower your baby's risk of SIDS and developing childhood leukemia as well as protect your baby from developing type 1 diabetes and high blood pressure later in life.

Breastfeeding isn't just good for your baby, it's good for you as well. Breastfeeding burns calories, which in turn helps you lose the pregnancy weight you gained. Also, nursing triggers the release of the hormone oxytocin, which will lower your stress levels. Oxytocin also helps your uterus contract back to size after birth, resulting in less postpartum bleeding. Breastfeeding for at least a year can protect you from breast and ovarian cancer. Lastly, breastfeeding can improve your bone density which can reduce the risk of osteoporosis later in life.

However, as great as breastfeeding is for you and your baby, it's not always easy. Sometimes babies have problems latching, and sometimes mothers have problems producing, and sometimes it's very easy for both mother and baby, but naturally you may have a lot of questions. That is why we are starting a breastfeeding support group, here our store.

Bring your baby to these special groups to share and learn in a friendly supportive atmosphere. Discussions are facilitated by a lactation consultant and broach many topics including postpartum adjustment, feeding, burping, sleeping, gas and colic, normal newborn behavior, soothing fussy babies and breastfeeding. Expectant mothers are also encouraged to attend prior to giving birth.

The breastfeeding support group is FREE and will take place at our store on Tuesdays from 10:30 A.M to 12 P.M. No registration is necessary. Contact us, or visit our website for more information.

Simplicity Cribs Recalled by Retailers; Mattress-Support Collapse Can Cause Suffocation and Strangulation

One Infant Death Reported

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing the recall of all Simplicity full-size cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames. This recall includes fixed-side and drop-side cribs. These cribs pose a risk of serious injury or death due to entrapment, strangulation, suffocation and fall hazards to infants and toddlers.

The crib's tubular metal mattress-support frame can bend or detach and cause part of the mattress to collapse, creating a space into which an infant or toddler can roll and become wedged, entrapped or fall out of the crib.

CPSC has received a report of a one-year-old child from North Attleboro, Mass. who suffocated when he became entrapped between the crib mattress and the crib frame in April 2008. CPSC is aware of 13 additional incidents involving the recalled cribs collapsing due to the metal mattress- support frame bending or detaching, including one child entrapment that did not result in injury, and one child who suffered minor cuts to his head when his mattress collapsed and he fell out of the crib.

CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Do not attempt to fix these cribs.

Due to the fact that Simplicity and its successor, SFCA Inc., are no longer in business, CPSC has limited information about the number of cribs sold. All Simplicity drop-side cribs have previously been recalled for a hazard involving the drop side. Simplicity drop-side cribs could still be in use by parents or caregivers who are unaware of the recalls or by those who received a repair kit to immobilize the drop side from Simplicity when the firm was still in business. This recall involves all Simplicity cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames, which include but are not limited to the following models:

Some model numbers are followed by letters, indicating the color or finish of the crib. The name "Simplicity Inc." or "Simplicity for Children" appears on a label on the crib's mattress-support frame and/or the crib's end panels. The cribs were manufactured in China.

The recalled cribs were sold at Walmart, Target, Babies R Us and other stores nationwide for between $150 and $300. Consumers should contact the store where the crib was purchased to receive a refund, replacement crib or store credit.

Important Message from CPSC:

CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap, which could fatally entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib with tape, wire, rope or by other means. Infants and toddlers have died in cribs with makeshift repairs.

Graco®-Branded Drop Side Cribs Made by LaJobi Recalled Due to Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Graco®-branded drop side cribs made by LaJobi

Units: About 217,000

Manufacturer: LaJobi Inc., of Cranbury, N.J.

Hazard: The drop side hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches, a hazardous gap is created between the drop side and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become wedged or entrapped, posing a risk of suffocation and strangulation. In addition, children can fall from the cribs when the drop side detaches or fails to lock.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC and LaJobi have received a total of 99 reports of drop side incidents, including hardware breakage and drop side detachment. There were two incidents in which children became entrapped in the gap created by the detached drop side. Both children were freed by their caregivers. There were six reports of children falling due to drop side failure, including one report of a mild concussion.

Description: This recall involves LaJobi-manufactured Graco® wood cribs. The full size cribs were sold in cherry, espresso, natural and white finishes. The production date, item number, purchase order number and finish name is printed on a label affixed to the footboard or headboard. "LaJobi" and the crib model name are printed on a product sticker located on the stabilizer bar or bottom rail of the crib. Affected models are listed below.

Mindfulness-Based Child-Birthing and Parenting

Here are Nurture, we help a lot of new mommies-to-be with the registering process. Most expecting parents get a little overwhelmed when they see all of the things they will need for the new baby on the way. When you are expecting your first child there is so much unknown. The extraordinary miracle of pregnancy and birth can too easily become clouded by fear and stress. It can be a beautiful time, but also a time of anxiety and nervous anticipation as we journey into the unknown...starting with the often feared process of child birth.

Often pain and anxiety are our greatest challenges in childbirth. Learning to use our mind to work with these challenges can make a huge difference in our labor and delivery experience. Our typical experience of pain is that something is wrong, and this in turn can elicit fear which brings with it a whole emotional and physiological chain of events. The pain of childbirth is something different. It is not a message of illness or injury, but of a powerful process of transformation taking place. In mindfulness meditation practices, we are learning to uncouple the fear associated with pain from the actual direct physical sensations. When we do that, we are radically changing our relationship to the pain and this can powerfully transform the experience of the sensation itself.

Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting is an adaptation of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD. It was developed twelve years ago by Nancy Bardacke, CNM, MA, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. This program is now being offered to the expectant parents of Philadelphia. This nine-week childbirth education course will help expectant parents:

· Access deep physical and mental relaxation
· Learn to engage the mind to work with pain during labor
· Increase confidence and courage for the experience of labor and delivery
· Practice prenatal yoga for strength and flexibility
· Develop skills for managing stress in pregnancy, parenting and daily life
· Enhance partner communication skills
· Become more aware of our own approach to parenting

This class will be a time to look deeply at pain and fear in childbirth and to cultivate present moment awareness for meeting whatever childbirth experience might unfold. It can also be helpful for those who anticipate a birth experience requiring special medical attention or for those who have had a previous difficult birth experience.

From No to Yes!

Why is the word "no" so much easier to say than "yes?" Most toddlers learn to say a defiant "no" much sooner then a sweet pleasing "yes." And it seems "no" quickly becomes a favorite word. Evenflo Recalls Top-of-Stair Plus Wood Gates Due to Fall Hazard

Name of product: Evenflo Top-of-Stair™ Plus Wood Gates

Units: About 150,000 in the United States and 33,000 in Canada

Manufacturer: Evenflo Co. Inc. of Miamisburg, Ohio

Hazard: The slats on the gate can break or detach, posing a fall hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: Evenflo has received 142 reports of slats breaking and/or detaching from the gate. Three children gained access to stairs. One of those children fell through the gate and down five steps; another fell down one step. Injuries included four children who sustained bumps and bruises to the head and seven children who sustained minor injuries including scratches, scrapes and bruises.

Description: The recall involves Evenflo models 10502 and 10512 Top-of-Stair Plus Wood Gates made from October 2007 through July 2009. The model number can be found on the bottom rail. No other Evenflo model numbers or gates are affected by this recall.

Infantino Recalls to Replace SlingRider Baby Slings; Three Infant Deaths Reported

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), in cooperation with Infantino LLC, of San Diego, Calif. are announcing a free replacement program for the Infantino “SlingRider” and “Wendy Bellissimo” infant slings. One million of these infant slings are being recalled in the United States and 15,000 are being recalled in Canada. CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using these slings for infants younger than four months of age due to a risk of suffocation and contact Infantino for a free replacement product.

CPSC is aware of three reports of deaths that occurred in these slings in 2009; a 7-week-old infant in Philadelphia, Pa.; a 6-day-old infant in Salem, Ore.; and a 3-month-old infant in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Infantino “SlingRider,” is a soft fabric baby carrier with a padded shoulder strap that is worn by parents and caregivers to carry an infant weighing up to 20 lbs. “Infantino” is printed on the plastic slider located on the strap. “Infantino,” “SlingRider” and the item number are printed on the instruction/warning label inside the baby sling carrier. “Wendy Bellissimo” branded sling carriers were sold exclusively at Babies “R” Us and have a sewn-in label on the inside of the sling strap that says in part "Wendy Bellissimo Media, Inc." and lists Item numbers 3937500H7 and 3937501H7.

Infantino LLC sold the slings in the United States and Canada from January 2003 through March 2010 at Walmart, Burlington Coat Factory, Target, Babies “R” Us, BJ’s Wholesale, various baby and children’s stores and other retailers nationwide, and on the Web at Amazon.com, for between $25 and $30.

The product was manufactured in China and Thailand.

Consumers should stop using the recalled slings immediately and contact Infantino to receive a free replacement product, with a choice of a Wrap & Tie infant carrier, or a 2 in 1 Shopping Cart Cover, or a 3 in 1 Grow & Play Activity Gym. Name of Product: Graco Harmony™ High Chairs

Units: About 1.2 million

Manufacturer: Graco Children's Products Inc., of Atlanta, Ga.

Hazard: The screws holding the front legs of the high chair can loosen and fall out and/or the plastic bracket on the rear legs can crack causing the high chair to become unstable and tip over unexpectedly. This poses a fall hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: Graco has received 464 reports of screws loosening/falling out and/or plastic brackets cracking causing the high chair to tip over unexpectedly. These tip-over's resulted in 24 reports of injuries including bumps and bruises to the head, a hairline fracture to the arm, and cuts, bumps, bruises and scratches to the body.

Description: This recall involves all Harmony™ High Chairs. The Harmony™ high chair was manufactured from November 2003 through December 2009 and is no longer in production. The model number can be found on the label that is located on the underside of the foot rest.

Motherhood and Stress -- two words that often go hand and hand: New moms are challenged by sleepless nights, difficulties with nursing, and figuring out new roles while re-defining our existing relationships.

Moms of toddlers and preschoolers are learning to reign in behavior problems and tantrums, figuring out the "right" age to do things (potty training, learning to reading, etc.) and often figuring out the delicate balance between work and home.

And, moms of older kids are trying to teach values and morals, managing each fly ball that comes their way, from problems with peers to difficulties at school. More than ever, moms of this age child are balancing a ton and feeling the load on their shoulders.

But, do Motherhood and Stress need to go hand in hand?
Not necessarily! Join Deborah Roth Ledley, PhD, licensed psychologist and author of Becoming a Calm Mom, to learn six simple strategies for navigating the path of motherhood calmly and happily. Bring questions, the program will be interactive and geared toward your unique concerns.

The Juggling Act of Motherhood

Moms today are faced with the task of juggling countless and diverse roles, demands, needs, and expectations for ourselves and others. Please join us, this Saturday from 10-11:15 AM, for a workshop addressing the personal and shifting nature of balance in motherhood and the challenges of working toward this balance. This participation-based workshop will also focus on themes that underlie this juggling act, such as redefining identity, gains and losses, self-care, and changing relationships.

The workshop will be given by Dr. Jennifer Hitelman. Dr. Hitelman is a Licensed Psychologist with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Drexel University. She also trained at duPont Hospital for Children, Division of Behavioral Health. She is experienced in treating individuals and families with emotional, behavioral, and social concerns. Dr. Hitelman strives to help families learn well- researched and effective strategies to improve areas of concern, and to implement these new tools into their lives while respecting the unique challenges of each individual and family. Her goal is to provide a supportive environment in which to equip her clients with the tools they need to feel confident in tackling the issues with which they are faced.

Name of Product: Britax “Blink” Umbrella Strollers

Units: About 14,000 in the United States and 900 in Canada

Hazard: The stroller’s hinge mechanism poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves all Britax “Blink” single umbrella strollers. “Blink” is printed on the metal frame on both sides of the stroller, below the hand grips. The recalled “Blink” strollers have model numbers U261813, U261814, U261815, U261816, U261817, U271813, U271817 and U271815 and were manufactured between May 2009 and September 2009. The model number and manufacturing date can be found on a white label on the stroller frame, near the bottom of the stroller basket.

Tiny Love Recalls Wind Chime Toys Due to Puncture and Laceration Hazards

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received five reports of babies pulling apart the wind chimes exposing the sharp metal rods, including a report of a minor injury to a 24-month-old baby who punctured his cheek with the rods.

Recall Alert! Dorel Asia Cribs

Name of Product: Dorel Asia cribs

Units: About 635,000

Distributor: Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados

Hazard: The drop side hardware can fail causing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. In addition, the recalled cribs can pose a serious entrapment and strangulation hazard when a slat is damaged. This can occur while the crib is in use, in storage, being put together, taken apart or reassembled; or during shipping and handling.

Reports: CPSC and Dorel Asia SRL received a report of the death of 6-month old child from Cedar Rapids, Iowa who became entrapped and strangled in a crib after the drop side hardware broke. The crib continued to be used after the parents tried to repair the drop side themselves. CPSC and Dorel Asia received reports of 31 drop side incidents. In six of those incidents, children were entrapped between the drop side and crib mattress. Three children suffered from bruises as a result of the entrapment. In addition, CPSC and Dorel Asia received reports of 36 incidents of slat breakage, including seven reports of bruises and scratches to children and two reports of entrapment that resulted in no injury.

Sold at: K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2009 for between $120 and $700.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs, find an alternative safe sleeping environment for your child, and contact Dorel Asia to receive a free replacement kit. Hazard: The hinges on the stroller’s canopy pose a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is opening or closing the canopy.

Incidents/Injuries: Graco has received seven reports of children placing their fingers in the stroller’s canopy hinge mechanism while the canopy was being opened or closed, resulting in five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations.

Sold at: AAFES, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide from October 2004 and December 2009 for between $80 and $90 for the strollers and between $150 and $200 for the travel systems.

Hear Me Sign Workshop

It can be so frustrating for both you and your child when your child wants something and is not able to tell you. For that reason, many parents have chosen to teach their babies sign language so that they can begin communicating with their child at an early age. Since babies master using their hands before they obtain all the motor skills required for speech, they will be able to sign their needs and wants to you before they are able to speak. There are many benefits to teaching your child sign language, besides being able to communicate with your child early. Research shows babies who sign:

Speak earlier than non-signers
Experience less frustration
Develop larger vocabularies
Become better readers
Have IQ’s that are at least 10-12 points higher

Teaching sing language to your child is easy. Once your child is able to wave, point and look at an object that has dropped on the floor, they are ready to sign. To teach them a sign, like the word "more" for example, you would start to feed them some oatmeal, stop feeding them and then say "do you want more" while making the sign, and then start feeding them more oatmeal. You can do this later during playtime, while tickling the baby stop tickling and then say do you want "more" and do the sign. Then again at bedtime while reading books: "do you want more stories?" Of course, in order to teach your child sign language, you will need to know the signs yourself.

Our "Hear Me Sign" workshop will teach you common signs that you use every day during mealtime, playtime, bedtime and getting dressed. Once you learn the signs you will be able to reinforce them at home with your child. The workshop is designed for pre-verbal babies, toddlers and their parents, caregivers, and grandparents. Mother-to-be, nannies, teachers, etc. may also attend! The workshop is most appropriate for all children who are between 6 months and 12 months of age and not yet able to articulate. However, adults are welcome on their own and children from birth- 3 are welcome. Signs taught are developmentally appropriate and are based on American Sign Language.

The workshop is this Saturday, December 12, from 10:00-11:30am.

The cost is as follows:

$80 for 2 adults and 1 child
$20 for each additional sibling (no extra charge for multiples)

Recall Alert-Stork Craft Drop-Side Cribs

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, today announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including about 147,000 Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. The recall involves approximately 1,213,000 units distributed in the United States and 968,000 units distributed in Canada.

CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and do not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit. They should find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side on these cribs to a fixed side.

The cribs’ drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing. In addition, the drop-side can be installed upside-down, which can result in broken or disengaged plastic parts. All of these problems can cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners. When the drop-side detaches, it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped in the space which can lead to suffocation. Complete detachment of drop-sides can lead to falls from the crib.

CPSC, Health Canada, and Stork Craft are aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment; 67 incidents occurred in the United States and 43 in Canada. The incidents include 15 entrapments; 12 in the U.S. and three in Canada. Four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation: a 7-month-old in Gouverneur, N.Y.; a 7-month-old in New Iberia, La.; a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va.; and a 9-month-old in Bronx, N.Y. Included in these incidents are 20 falls from cribs; 12 in the U.S. and eight in Canada. Fall injuries ranged from concussion to bumps and bruises. The cribs involved in these incidents had plastic drop-side hardware that had broken, missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, or flexible tab stops; loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down.

This recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. This recall does not involve any cribs that do not have a drop-side. This recall does not involve any cribs with metal rod drop-side hardware. It involves only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware.

This recall includes Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009. This recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004. The Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were first sold in the U.S. in July 1998 and in Canada in September 1998. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm’s insignia “storkcraft baby” or “storkling” is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs. Mini Flashlights - The mini flashlights have a key ring extending from the bottom and were sold in a pack of three colors: orange, green and black. The orange and purple packaging has “Mini Flashlights (3 Pack)” printed on the front and “DGI”, “Made in China” and “DPCI# 234-02-1813” printed on the back.
Standard Size Flashlights - Also included in the recall are standard sized flashlights with a black handle and an orange top. The flashlights were sold with six stencils in various colors and images: a pumpkin, ghost, spider, cat, witch and skull & cross-bones. “Flashlight with Stencil” is printed on the front and “Tien Hsing,” “Made in China” and ”234 02 1838” is printed on the back of the packaging.

We are continuing our cloth diaper education series today with a lesson on bumgenius 3.0 cloth diapers. Bumgenius cloth diapers are designed to make cloth diapering easy. Dads and babysitters alike love the bumgenius 3.0's. The velcro stretch tabs make these cloth diapers go on and off as easy as disposables, even on the most wiggly little baby. The diapers are a one-size daiper, designed to fit your baby from birth to 35 pounds.

The bumgenius 3.0's are pocket diapers. An absorbent insert is stuffed inside the waterproof cover. The diapers come with a one size insert and a newborn insert, which can be used on newborns to keep the diapers from being too bulky, or can be used with your one size insert to give you extra absorbency at nap times or outings.

I scoured youtube for a good bumgenius tutorial and this is the best one that I could find. In this video she stuffs her diapers with a microfiber towel but bumgenius diapers come with inserts that are very absorbant, so don't worry, there is no need for you to run out and purchase a microfiber towel.

Mommy and Me Classes Start Next Week

If you're a new Mom you may have noticed that there is an instant bond formed between you and other new Moms. The conversation flows endlessly, you learn from each other and support each other. Now throw a few more mommies and babies and a child development specialist in the mix and you have a party...or, as we like to call it "Mommy and Me."

Mommy & Me is an informal education support group for first time moms with infants 6 weeks to 18 months. Come meet other new moms and learn from each other and the facilitator. Various topics of your choice will be discussed, such as adjusting to parenthood, sleeping, feeding, and development. The groups will be facilitated by Joan (Joanie) Nolen. Joanie is a well known child development specialist and parenting educator currently working in center city Philadelphia. She has over 17 years of experience in the field of parent education. Joan is a former elementary and preschool teacher and the mother of three grown children.

Parenting can be extremely challenging and many parents find the transition and adjustment to their new role overwhelming. Parenting skills need to be learned. New parents need information and support to develop these skills. Research has shown how you respond to your child in the early years can influence how he or she interacts with their world throughout life. Children need a nurturing and stimulating environment. The goal of Mommy and Me is for you to feel more comfortable and secure in handling your child’s behavior and to teach you how to satisfy your own needs as well as your child’s so you can relax and enjoy each other.

We are offering two Mommy and Me classes. Adjusting to Parenthood is for infants 0-3 months old. It's a 6 week session starting this coming Tuesday, October 6th. Of those diagnosed, an estimated 2,500 children will not survive, that is one child in the US dying from cancer every 3.5 hours. 36 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every day in the United States, that is one new diagnosis every 40 minutes.

As you may have heard in this post, or this post, we now carry Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers. Fuzzi Bunz diapers were invented in 1999 by a Mother in response to her son's chronic diaper rash. Since then Fuzzi Bunz have become one of the most popular cloth diapering systems on the market. Sturdy snap closures, durability, no leaks and a variety of fun colors are some of the reasons parents love Fuzzi Bunz diapers.

The pendants have various animated symbols including a dog tag with fire symbol (Bleach), knife and lion symbol (Final Fantasy), Mickey Mouse symbol (Kingdom of Hearts), and a burning sun symbol (Naruto). The pendants were sold with silver-colored chains.

Cloth Diapers 101

If we convinced you that you should use cloth diapers in our previous post, then you are probably curious about the various types of cloth diapers that are out there. Here is a breakdown, sure to broaden your cloth diaper vocabulary:

Prefolds: Prefolds (above) are the least expensive cloth diaper system on the market today. Chances are you own a set of Gerber prefolds and you are using them as burp cloths. Prefolds have multiple layers of absorbency, with the most absorbent layer in the middle. They are often referred to as 2x6x2's, 4x8x4's, etc. The numbers refer to the layers of absorbency. When putting a prefold on a baby you can either fold the diaper around the baby and pin it, or you can lay the prefold into a diaper cover like a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap, which Velcros or snaps close just like a disposable diaper. When the prefold becomes soiled you just toss the prefold into your diaper pail and as long as the cover is not dirty you can place a new prefold into the cover that was already on baby. Prefolds are inexpensive, but they are not the most absorbent or user friendly cloth diaper out there.

Pocket Diapers: A much more popular, and user friendly choice, pocket diapers have a layer of fleece sewn into the diaper cover and an opening in the back of the cover, so that the diaper can be stuffed with an absorbent layer. With velcro and snap closures, the diapers go on and off just like disposables. When a pocket diaper is soiled, both the cover and the absorbent layer must be washed. When your diapers come out of the dryer, stuff the absorbent layer into the pocket and your diapers are ready for use. Pocket diapers are more absorbent than prefolds and pretty easy to use, unfortunately they are also more expensive too.

All-in-Ones (AIO's): All-in-ones are the easiest cloth diaper to use. The absorbent layer is sewn right into the diaper cover, so there is no stuffing or folding. The diapers go on and off just like disposables. While AIO's are the easiest diaper to use, they are not very absorbant, and they take a long time to dry. They are best used during the day (especially since they are so husband and babysitter friendly) but they are not recommended for night time and long naps.

Fitteds: Fitted diapers are a pocket diaper or an AIO that are designated to fit a certain size baby. These diapers will give you the trimmest fit and are best for cloth diapering a newborn. The downside to buying fitted diapers is that you have to keep reinventing your diaper stash as your baby grows.

One Size: One size diapers (like the Bumgenius 3.0 and the Fuzzibunz diapers we carry at Nurture) adjust in the front and on the sides so that they will grow with your baby. One size diapers are great if you are choosing to cloth diaper in an effort to save money. However, one size diapers can be very bulky on small infants and may not fit a newborn baby.

There are a lot diaper choices out there but most cloth diapers are only available for purchase on the internet, so it's hard to tell what you are getting. Should You Use Cloth Diapers?

Is cloth diapering becoming mainstream? It may be hard to believe, but many parents have switched to cloth. Even some celebrity moms like Julia Roberts and Maggie Gyllenhaal are toting cloth bottomed tots. These aren't your Grandma's cloth diapers. Gone are the days of pins and rubber pants. The new cloth diapers of today snap and velcro close. Pocket diapers and all-in-ones allow users to customize their absorbency, and they come in a variety of fun colors and prints.

So, have you ever thought about switching to cloth? Here are some of the facts you should consider.

Skin Care and Health Concerns:

A study done by a disposable diaper manufacturing company shows that the incidence of diaper rash increased from 7.1% to 61% with the increased use of throwaway disposable diapers. This could be due to the chemicals and dyes used in disposable diapers, among which is sodium polyacrylate (the absorbent gel) which has been linked to toxic shock syndrome, allergic reactions and is potentially lethal to pets. If you cut a diaper in half and look at what is inside the diaper you may be surprised to find the unnatural elements you are putting against your baby's most sensitive skin every day.

Since disposable diapers are more absorbent than cloth diapers, a child may be changed less often when they are in a disposable diaper (sidebar-babies who wear cloth diapers tend to potty train faster, since they can feel when they are wet). This can also lead to diaper rash, as the bacteria in the child's waste is sitting against their skin for long periods of time.

Environment:

It is estimated that a diaper takes 500 years to decompose. It takes around 80,000 pounds of plastic and over 200,000 trees a year to manufacture the disposable diapers for American babies alone.

While some people argue that the water use and detergent run off of cloth diapers is just as harmful to the environment as disposables, the fact is the amount of water used per week to wash cloth diapers at home is about the same amount consumed by an adult flushing the toilet four to five times daily for a week. Also, when flushing solids from a cloth diaper down the toilet and washing the diapers in a washing machine, the contaminated, dirty water from both toilet and washing machine go into the sewer systems where they are properly treated at wastewater plants.

Cost:

In today's economic climate many parents are choosing to switch to cloth in an effort to save money. It is estimated that parents spend anywhere from $50-80 a month on diapers. One child will go through an average of $2500 in disposable diapers. Cloth diapers average about $18 a diaper, and with many one-size diaper options out there, you may only need to buy 18 diapers to get you through your child's diapering days. The cost of laundering your cloth diapers comes to about $4 a week, when you factor in detergent, water and energy costs. So, if you purchase 18 cloth diapers and you diaper your child for 3 years your total comes to $948, a significant cost savings. Your savings are furthered if you use your diapers again for subsequent children. Also, cloth diapers have a great resale value, so when you are finished with your diapers you can sell them on a website like www.diaperswappers.com and get some of your money back.

Convenience:

Of course disposable diapers are more convenient than cloth, but with todays velcro and snap fastenings, cloth diapers are just as easy to put on and take off as disposables. If you're a little squeamish when it comes to poop, they now have cloth diapering accessories that make it even easier, like flushable liners you can lift out of the diaper and flush down the toilet, and diaper sprayers that rinse the mess into the toilet. And although you will be doing more laundry with cloth diapers, it is only about 2-3 loads a week, and unlike your normal wash, there is no folding and sorting involved, just toss it in the washer, the dryer and presto...clean diapers are ready for your baby's bum!

Recall Alert-Little Tikes Workshop Sets and Trucks

Little Tikes, of Hudson Ohio, has recalled 1.6 million workshop sets and trucks. The toys have oversized plastic toy nails that can pose a choking hazard to young children. The firm has received one report of an 11-month old boy from Goose Creek, S.C. who choked when the toy nail become forcefully lodged in his throat. The child was hospitalized and made a full recovery. The oversized, plastic toy nail is about 3 ¼ inches long by 1 ¼ inch in diameter and comes in red or blue colors. It has a large round head; about 1 ¼ inches below the head is a plastic ridge, slightly smaller than the nail head and about 1 inch in diameter. They were sold with a variety of Little Tikes Children’s products. The names, model numbers and UPC code of the products included in this recall are listed below:

Making your own baby food will not only save you money, but more importantly it will ensure that your child eats fresh, nutritious food, free of additives. Thanks to the Babycook, making your own baby food has never been easier.

Simply fill the reservoir with the measured amount of water.

Place diced fruits, vegetables or meat in the steaming basket (in this example we are making sweet potatoes).

Place the steaming basket into the carafe, secure the lid, lock it into place and turn the knob to steam. An orange light will appear. When the light goes out, your steaming is complete.

Remove the steaming basket with the spatula. Dump some of the water left in the carafe out, leave the rest and place the steamed food back into the carafe.

Turn the knob to puree and puree your food to your desired consistency.

Speed Sitter Event-RECAP

We have had a whirlwind week here at Nurture. As you know, we let Premier Sitter Services host a speed sitter event at our store on Wednesday night. On Monday we received a call from NBC saying they wanted to do a news story on the event. We were thrilled, but there was one problem, we were not expecting a huge turnout so we needed to work quickly on getting more people to the event. After some emails, phone calls, and reducing the price to FREE, we ended up with 6 parents and 8 babysitters, not a bad turnout, we breathed a small sigh of relief.

On Wednesday we received another call from NBC, they wanted to send a crew out that afternoon to interview a mom attending the event. Since the event did not start until 7 we had to scramble to find a mom who was attending the event and available to come to the store at 3:30 for an interview. We made a few calls and finally found a Mom who could do it. At 3:00pm we had everything ready for our big TV debut and our Mom was on her way. Then we got another call from NBC, a tragic shooting had happened at the Holocaust Museum and they would not be able to make it to our store for the interview, however they still planned on showing up for the event. We called our Mom who was on her way and told her to turn around.

At 7pm our parents and babysitters were in their seats ready to meet each other. The event went well. The parents each got a folder with 14 sitter resumes, complete with their references and availability, and got to meet with 8 of the 14 sitters on the spot. After the speed interviews were over everyone was able to do a little discounted shopping and mingle. At around 8:30pm we still had no sign of a camera crew. We soon found out that the crew was almost at the store, when they were told to turn around and get to the scene of a horrible car crash in Philadelphia,

So our little speed sitter event turned out to be not so newsworthy when compared to the tragic breaking news that was happening on Wednesday. We were very saddened to hear of these two events, and our hearts go out to the victims in these stories. We of course understand that these stories needed to have news coverage over our own. We just think it’s funny that we spent three days going bonkers over a camera crew that never made it! Oh well, it was entertaining to say the least, and we ended up having a fabulous event, so it was worth it.

Speed Sitter Event

On Wednesday June 10, from 7pm-9pm Premier Sitter Services will be hosting a Speed Sitter Interview event at our store. Each parent will have four minutes to speak with up to 20 babysitters to learn more about their availability, experience and personality. Once the speed interviews are complete, 30 minutes remain to mingle and learn more about the candidates. Parents will also receive the coveted Sitter Directory, with a resume, photo and contact info for each sitter present at the event.

Of course no event held at our store would be complete with out light refreshments and discounted shopping.

So grab your girlfriends and come down to the store for what could be the first of many well deserved girls nights out.

Threads of Hope

Check out these adorable dresses we just got in! You may be surprised to find out that these are not the latest designer duds fresh off the kiddie clothes runways. These clothes were not made in a factory, and there is no designer name sewn into the garment. These dresses were actually made in Ecuador by someone in economic need, perhaps a widow, or an orphan, or a fellow mom trying to provide for her children. These dresses were provided to Nurture through a nonprofit organization called Threads of Hope. Threads of Hope is a mission that provides sewing machines and garment construction skills to economically challenged individuals in poor countries. Through Threads of Hope, these individuals are able to achieve an improved standard of living, work at home opportunities, practical skills, English language development, and improved self-esteem.

We are so excited about our new blog! Lets start off by giving you a little background info. Nurture opened it's doors a little over one year ago. The whole idea for this store began when an overwhelmed pregnant woman found herself lost and helpless in the isles of a baby superstore (you know the one). Fast forward to seven years later and this once pregnant woman now has two babies, a little girl, and a store that carries everything you need for your baby in an intimate setting where moms can feel comfortable asking questions.

Today you no longer have to wander aimlessly down the aisles of a baby superstore. At Nurture, our knowledgeable sales staff can assist you with every decision. We have hand picked the best baby items out there and we stand by what we sell, because we're moms too.

Now we want to pass on our wealth of knowledge to all of you. Since we are in the business of baby products, we have to keep up with the latest and greatest safety information, product recalls and baby trends. We often receive inquiries from local mothers who want to know "what's the best stroller out there?" or "how do you properly install a car seat?" Well we have answers and we want to share them!
